Lewis Grizzard Articles about UGA
Lewis
Grizzard is one of my favorite writers. His wit and wisdom is missed
by all. While reading through his books, I always made a point to
notice his love of the University of Georgia and his hatred of Georgia
Tech. I also clipped a few of his columns while I was a student
at UGA. Two of my favorite UGA memories have Lewis in them. When
UGA participated in the 1993 Citrus Bowl versus Ohio State, the
Redcoats had to perform at a pep rally at Seaworld. Well, we had
already marched in about three or four other parades and had been
getting up at seven each morning. Needless to say, we were pooped,
and I wasn't exactly thrilled about doing another parade.
As soon as we got up to the front of the crowd, who did we see on
stage but ole Lewis himself. I immediately forgot all about my weariness
as soon as he started speaking about UGA vs. Ohio State. I wish
I could remember his entire speech, but I was laughing too hard.
Basically it was about how any Southern team can beat up
on a Yankee team, especially UGA.
My
second memory of Grizzard occured before a Georgia home game. I
was walking down to the stadium with a couple of other band people.
Right before we started to go down the steps on Sanford Drive, one
of my friends piped up "Hey! I think that was Lewis Grizzard!"
Well, we turned around and walked back to where she thought she
saw him. Sure enough, he was sitting there next a limosine. I didn't
know what to say (my friend still laughs about this) so I just kind
of stared at him for a minute. Finally, I said, "I really enjoyed
the article that you wrote last year about the Tech band."
[See below "Does Tech's T"] He replied, "Yeah, they
are the worst damn band I've ever seen." AMEN.
Lewis,
we really miss you.
