DawgVent history

DawgVent history

Question

Answer

Who created the Vent?

That would be Dawgmaster...now seen around here occasionally as DM.

When?

January 1996 as a guestbook script to his site.

What was its address for the first few years?

pluto.centurionsys.com then www.dawgnation.com/dawgvent using the generous hosting of Centurion Systems.

The creator of the Vent had a website that the Vent was a part of. What was his site called?

The Junkyard

When did the Vent go "corporate" (become part of a network)?

Towards the end of 1998, the Vent merged with the existing AllianceSports UGA site. The AllianceSports site actually had a "competing" forum when it first launched.

Who is Greg?

Greg Gough was the co-founder of AllianceSports back in the mid-1990s. He and his AllianceSoftware company developed a content management system and message board software to power AllianceSports and several other sites. He now is the CTO of Rivals.com and is responsible for all technical aspects of what you see on this site.

How many and which networks has the Vent been a part of?

Technically three. The orginal AllianceSports was bought by the original Rivals.com in January 2000 and the Vent and UGASports.com went with it. In May 2001, the original Rivals.com went under. The former management team of AllianceSports came in to salvage what they could, including the Rivals brand name. Many of the old Rivals sites, including this one, went with the new Rivals team while others remained with the founder of the old Rivals in a different network. Confused yet?

Which recruit (and current NFL Dawg) had his college announcement "broadcast" live on the Vent, and how did that happen?

In early 1998, Will Witherspoon made his announcement at a press conference in Panama City. Most of the Vent was gathered in the chat room while Cartersville Dawg relayed a play-by-play of the conference via cellphone.

Who developed the first Vent chat room?

SoonerDawg developed a chat room (DawgChat of course) that was plugged into dawgnation.com before it became part of a network and was a very popular destination for recruiting chats in especially 1998 (culminating in the Witherspoon announcement).

Who put in place a "backup Vent" for the occasional hours or days of downtime?

Lilburn Dawg put up a very basic board called the Bulldawg Wall. Back in the days when it was just DM running the show, outages were occasional until he found time to work on them and the Vent would go through withdrawal until it was back up. The Bulldawg Wall served as a great stopgap. Aside - a time or two, the Vent even used the Hive (yes, that Hive) as a refuge with the grudging hospitality of the Bees. Could you imagine that happening today?

Which current Dawg stopped in to post a message just after he signed with UGA?

Max Jean-Gilles.

Which OL recruit's mom non-anonymously posted on the Vent to learn more about UGA?

Colin Barker was a mid-major OL prospect from Texas with ties in Georgia. His mom was very active here in 2000 during the early part of the recruiting process while she was researching schools for her son. She asked a lot of questions about UGA, and few had to do with football. For some, it was the first 2x4 over the head that recruits and their families read these boards.

How long has Steve Patterson been a journalist covering the Dawgs?

Steve was brought on to the fledgling AllianceSports network in 1997 to run their Georgia site. He really took off during spring ball in 1998 and hasn't looked back, developing an outstanding reputation as one of the longest-tenured journalists dedicated to covering the Dawgs.

When did post counts start?

Post counts go back to when the Vent re-launched under the new Rivals.com network - approx. May 29, 2001. There are people with thousands of posts before May 2001 who would get "not responding" status today.

What was the occasion of the first Ventogther?

Signing Day 1997 saw the first organized gathering of Venters at Frankie's in Atlanta and started the tradition of big Vent blowouts on Signing Day. Considering that the board was a little over a year old, it was very well-attended and clued us in that there are some pretty good folks around these posts.

Who is credited for coining the term "Dawgnation?"

DM's lovely wife Lisa gets credit for the name which he later used for his website.

What kept the Vent in a stir over 48 consecutive hours (including an all-night "vigil") in late 1998?

The news that Jim Donnan was considering an offer from North Carolina kept the Vent on 24-hour watch for a weekend waiting for a final decision. MCGDawg was among those keeping the fires burning until news came down that he would not be leaving. Of course Donnan would be fired two years later.

To whom does the Vent look for recaps of the weekly call-in show?

Jim from Duluth has been the Sunday Night Scribe as long as I can remember. His reports are archived over at Dawg Treasures.

Who are ToonDawg and AirForceDawg?

Two longtime Venters who developed very important web sites tangential to the Vent community. ToonDawg, formerly known as KarateDawg, runs the Anti Orange Page, a valuable source of Bulldog lore and humor. Perhaps the alpha Dawgette, she spent several years on the early Vent answering to "way to go, man" before it sunk in that this wasn't a boys-only clubhouse. AirForceDawg runs the Dawg Treasures site which has served as an archive of classic posts and history from the community. He's kept his service up despite his military obligations moving him from the Gulf Coast to the Middle East to the Pacific Northwest. Damn good Dawg and American.

Who has the most (in)famous Tahoe on the Vent?

TEEDAWG of course. You can spot the distinctive flagpole and grill at most any Dawg game.

How did SeveredHead get his name?

From this post:

OK. Guys, let me set the record straight on WHY I demand respect....

I've lived life. Had my share. Back in 1986 before Georgia played Clemson in Athens, GA I nearly lost my life. Was on Milledge Avenue about 3 hours before the game. My best friend and I in his car. Right as we passed through an area known as "Five Points" our car was blind sided. I was knocked unconscious. When I came to I was upside down and my best friend's head was on my lap. A complete head. I honestly did not know if I was dreaming or not it was so surreal. Where the accident took place was near Fraternity row and some idiot sticks his head inside the car and asks me if I wanted a beer. I just completely blacked out from the shock of it all.

Now, I hope you guys understand what I mean by demanding reespect. When you have lived through what I have you demand respect. I don't mean to come on here and be anything other than a guy who has lived life but lived through a horrific event.

-Coltess, whose famous tirade led to the birth of SeveredHead, circa 1998.

Who drove the Oldsmobubble?

Every seasoned Venter knew that OldDawg and Lady Joan made the Olsmobubble their transportation of choice when escaping from enemy territory in north Florida. It (and he, LOL) has since been retired.

Who named her child in part after Hines Ward?

I guess "Bruce" will be saved for the second youngun, but of course it's G-Lady.

Who first brought the "Tech lies and cheats" gospel to the Vent?

While many make impressive claims to be among the top Tech haters on the board, Dawg44's famous four words are now a part of us all.

Who wrote this DawgVent FAQ?

Groo.
