It’s BCS bliss in the Bulldog Nation. Tonight’s show follows Georgia’s 7th straight win over Tech, 31-17. The BCS selection show is Sunday, December 2, 8:00 pm ET on Fox.
College football may have been saving its best for last. It started Friday when Arkansas [4] beat LSU [5] in overtime. Missouri beat Kansas in that big war in the Midwest. Kentucky [6], not big enough or strong enough, stayed on the field with Tennessee [7] for hours in several overtimes.
What was left of old-time college rivalries were played on Saturday and went largely by the odds. Munson pointed out West Virginia being really dangerous. Georgia had its expected world war with Ga. Tech, with several funny bounces that went our way. Finally Thomas Brown, after all his injuries and surgeries, ran around and through the Jackets, who were really set to stop Moreno. Also, Oregon is gone, after losing their starting QB last week then the backup QB this past weekend.
Munson had one question for CMR: suddenly, everyone is getting 11 TD. Where did all the offense come from? CMR: the kickoff was moved back so it helped field position. The rules also changed back from last year where they helped the defense. Last year, there were 15-20 fewer plays per game. And it cycles out. A lot of defenses in our league graduated.
Mitchell in Baxley wonders if Munson will call the bowl game and be back next year. Also, what bowl does Richt see us in? Munson said he will call the bowl game. No idea about next year. CMR is glad to hear that. What bowl is very complicated. Not 100% certain we’ll be in BCS but odds are we will. Which one depends on who wins these last few games. We’re out of the Sugar Bowl. The winner of the SEC title game goes there.
Clay in Guyton was glad to see Munson get some TV time. Was the cigar good? Munson – yes! Hats off to CMR and staff for lighting a fire under the team after the Tenn. game. With the month off, what is our plan for practice and preparation? How are Moreno and Brandon Coutu? CMR – lots of schoolwork, also lifting. We’ll have a short practice on Thursday. Next week, school up to Thursday and four lifts. Friday is a reading day in advance of finals. The 14th is the last day of finals so we’ll have a practice that evening. The 15th is commencement. Our goal is to get 12-14 practices prior to the bowl. We’ll leave a day or two after Christmas to get to the bowl site.
Moreno is fine .. tweaked his ankle. Coutu had a slight hamstring pull. Both will be fine for the bowl game.
Munson asked about prep for the Tech game…we had to be careful not to drop back and throw. We had to get the ball out quick. The first 3rd down we had we got sacked. We had to make sure we weren’t trying to do too many things and be sure to pound the ball. We also had to realize who was in the game
Tim in Bonaire was also glad to see Munson on TV and congratulated CMR for a great year.
I wondered if us playing at Arizona St. next year would be a factor in discussions with various bowls. Richt doesn’t think so. He thinks the biggest thing is whether our fans are interested in which bowl sites based on advance ticket ordering. The Rose or Fiesta would be the trip of a lifetime. Even if we someday played in a national title game in Pasadena it would be different from the Rose Bowl itself, where you could go to the parade and the game.
Paul in Centre, AL thinks the future is bright. If we don’t get into the championship game (some shows think we would be passed), what about playing USC in the Rose Bowl? CMR doesn’t think its all bad to talk about what could be since we don’t know. If you play any of the possible teams in any of the BCS games .. going to the Rose Bowl to play USC, the dominant team in the US the last few years, would be a pretty good measuring stick. The outcome of that game could have something to do with preseason rankings.
Matt in Chatsworth noticed a lot of times that when we audible LBs cheat up. He agrees with CMR that if we can’t go to the title game the Rose Bowl would be great. Matt also thinks its great Katharyn does the water girl stuff. Richt – the audible system .. we may audible to a run or pass. We call two plays in the huddle – sometimes run first, sometimes pass first. Opponents can guess but they won’t always be right. Katharyn loves doing it and gets to know the players better. She gets there 4-5 hours before the game like the other managers and trainers.
William in Chattanooga – thanks for the 10 win season but too bad we couldn’t get Tenn. off our backs. On Stafford’s TD run, he looked like Greene faking the ball. CMR: on the zone read play, if you can read it quickly, sometimes the faking isn’t as good. If the DE is playing it halfway you keep the ball in the back’s belly longer. Stafford kept that ball in there. No one knows before the play what’s going to happen. Our backs do a good job faking the run and carrying out their reads.
Carl in Bainbridge mentioned how a certain prospect did and wants another shot at WV. CMR said we were the first ones to realize what a juggernaut they would be. There’s not a scenario where we could meet them this year. The only way we could get in the title game is if WV lost.
Randy in Bethlehem notices Reshad Jones is really coming on. About recruiting – last year there was a big buzz about Moreno. What about Caleb King? CMR: Reshad is really coming on. As you saw, he has the ball skills to come up and get an INT, and able to lay the wood. King – CMR has seen enough of him running to where he’ll be excited to see him run the ball. He has gotten some work on pass protection. He’ll have the entire spring and fall camp to perfect it.
Paul in Canton is concerned about a play in the UK where a guy laid off a guy for 20-30 yards. The same thing happened vs. Tech where it looked like a guy ran down the sideline. Was it the same defense? CMR: we were in a two deep zone. People will try to put a WR in front of the nose of the safety and bend him in to the goal post. The safety has to be able to break on that. The biggest problem on that play is UK’s QB was able to hold the ball too long. Our safety was close to being able to break on a ball down the middle, then had to wheel around and try to make a play. If people know that’s the coverage they try that play. The second situation was more of a one-safety defense. Asher was in a 3-deep look and was looking at the QB and thought it would be a different route. Now you’re asking a safety to come from deep middle, which is too much.
Scott in Grayson thanked CMR for another win over the nats. What is CMR’s take on a possible rematch with VT? Would that sway the Orange Bowl to not take us? And what about the gala on Friday night? CMR: not sure if a possible rematch would keep the Orange Bowl from picking us. We would be one of the more attractive teams based on our ranking in the BCS. If we are #3 or #4 in the BCS after this week we have to be part of it.
The gala will be a blast. Great music from different eras, great players from different eras, live auction, great food, real elegant affairs. It will be a celebration of our seniors and anyone else who achieved. We’re just going to announce who won various awards. The Vince Dooley and David Jacobs awards will be handed out and captains will be named.
Eddie in Acworth is also excited about beating Tech again. Stafford’s fake and long TD run harkened back to George Godsey of Tech some years back. Moreno was shut down Saturday – what’s his psyche now? CMR: Moreno wasn’t real thrilled about not getting 100 again. He ran into a brick wall a couple of times. Some times the hole opens up pretty and sometimes it doesn’t. This game Thomas’s opportunities opened up and KM’s didn’t. CMR is excited about Lump being able to come back for the bowl.
Graham in Forsyth hopes CMR is finding Georgia home. His neighbors are all worried CMR would take off for some opening like FSU whenever that happens. CMR said he & his wife loved Georgia before they got here. It’s a wonderful university and wonderful city. The players are like family.
Dusty in Tifton thought Munson looked good on national TV. To CMR: how hard is it to recruit a kicker capable of playing college football? Richt: signing a kicker is tough because you never know how they’ll perform. Some of our best kickers came through the walk on program. This year Mimbs beat out Butler. Mimbs has been around a while and Butler’s young, being redshirted and has time to have a good career. You hope you can find a guy through recruitment.
William in Augusta said CMR has made it easy to be a Georgia fan the last seven years. College football is the greatest sport but the only one where the championship is not decided on the field. Presidents need to decide whether their loyalties are to their schools and teams or to a stodgy old bowl system. CMR – you may not like the answer .. the regular season is more exciting than any other sport ..because there is no playoff system. If you had a playoff system, some of these games wouldn’t be as meaningful since teams that lost knew they could make the playoff.
