"SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENTS"
*UGA ALUMNI ASSOCIATION UNVEILS SPECIAL BULLDOG IN NEW ATHENS ART
EXHIBIT
The UGA Alumni Association selected local artist Chris Wyrick '00, co-owner
of Mercury Art Works, to design one of 36 four-foot (44" x 70" x 33")
fiberglass bulldogs as part of the Athens-Oconee Junior Woman's Club's charity-driven
"We Let the Dogs Out" public art exhibit.
"Dog Walker" the Alumni Association's bulldog, which pays tribute
to UGA sports living legend and Heisman trophy winner Herschel Walker (who led
Georgia to both the 1980 SEC and National football championships), will be installed
by Memorial Day in front of the Association's Wray-Nicholson House headquarters.
The art exhibit, akin to the Cow Parade featured in cities across the United
States such as Chicago and Manhattan, showcases local artists' talents, and
will be displayed for three years in Athens and Oconee Counties.
Wyrick selected Walker as a subject because of the connection so many UGA alumni
and fans feel to him. To view Wyrick's progressive work on the Alumni Association's
bulldog, go to http://www.alumni.uga.edu/alumni/wyrick.html
and for more information visit http://www.alumni.uga.edu/alumni/Press042203.html.
For questions about "We Let the Dogs Out," please contact Julie Walters
of the Athens-Oconee Junior Woman's Club at 706-769-8681.
*UGA ALUMNI ASSOCIATION PRESENTS UGA CREW TEAM WITH CHECK
An arson attack in March damaged the UGA crew team's newly finished boathouse
and, as a result, six of eight UGA rowing shells were rendered un-rowable. Estimated
damage to the boats alone is over $80,000. Though the sport continues at UGA
despite the arson, the UGA Crew team continues to ask for financial support.
Answering the call, the UGA Alumni Association presented the team with a financial
contribution on April 23. To offer assistance, please contact Eric Sherman at
706-340-3030.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY IRMA!
On May 3, one of the University of Georgia's oldest living alumna celebrated
her ninety-fifth birthday. Irma Frost Todd graduated from the University in
1930 with a major in Latin. After graduation, Irma taught school in Georgia
and married the late Cecil Pierce "Cy" Todd of Savannah in 1936. They
and their three children moved to Florida in 1951 and Irma returned to teaching,
retiring after 28 years in Orange and Hillsborough Counties.
After retirement, she traveled the world extensively. She also substituted
as a Latin teacher and was a volunteer teacher at the Tampa Oral School for
the Deaf. She sang in the choir at St. Mary's Episcopal Church for thirty years
and then became a member of the choir at Hyde Park Presbyterian. She continued
to tutor in Latin until she moved to Southern California in 1999.
She remains active and in good health and enjoys morning outings, playing bingo,
music, and playing the piano by ear. She credits her long life to never worrying
and having been very happy in her chosen profession. Her granddaughter, Diana
Christine Ratagick, sent this information to the Alumni Association.
*UGA ALUMNI ASSOCIATION PRESENTS PROCLAMATIONS
The UGA Alumni Association presented two proclamations in April. On G-Day, April
5, the UGA 2002 Football Team was honored for winning the 2002 SEC Championship
and for the victory against Florida State at the Nokia Sugar Bowl. On April
12, the Association honored Matias Boeker, former UGA tennis player, before
the UGA tennis match against Tennessee on April 12. Boeker became the 2002 SEC
Player of the Year and was named the ITA National Player of the Year for 2001
and 2002. He won the NCAA singles championship in 2001 and 2002 and gained professional

"FEEDBACK"
THANKS FOR THE KIND WORDS AND GOOD ADVICE!
"Hi, I am an alum and I wanted you to know how much it means to see the
newsletter recognize the troops. I graduated in 2000 and I am married to a Marine
that I met while I was at Georgia. I've learned in a very short time how important
support and good thoughts from loved ones and even strangers are now that my
husband is helping to defend our country. So I know that you were asking for
Alumni that are serving, but I really wanted to say "thanks" for mentioning
the troops in the newsletter. So I say the more support the better to get them
home safe and sound. Thanks Again" Kristyn Prentice-Langlois '00
"This e-mail is not intended to be critical nor negative. I appreciate
your message of support for the armed forces. This e-mail is intended to provide
information and clarification.
You did not mention the National Guard or Reserves in your Newsletter. The National
Guard is the oldest branch of the military having it's beginning with the Minute
Men and Militia during the Revolution. The active duty branches of the military
services that you mentioned (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard)
could not accomplish their missions without the Guard and Reserve forces.
In the first paragraph, you stated that 17 UGA students were "called"
to active duty. These were probably Guard or Reserve members which serve in
an Inactive status until called to Active status. Regular member of the military
are always on "active" status unless recently retired or separated.
Many students are members of the guard and reserves because it provides money
that allows them to attend the university. They can receive the GI Bill, grants,
scholarships and their weekend drill pay. Also, they are often very proud of
their country and want to serve.
Once again, I hope this helps. If you have any questions, please feel free to
contact me and I will try to help".
Sincerely, Major John Wiggins, Retired Georgia Air National Guard
AND THANKS FOR READING!
