How sweet it is - for the third time in a row! The Georgia Ice Dogs defeated
Georgia Tech 4-2 on Saturday night before a capacity crowd at the Savannah Civic Center to capture it's third straight Memorial Health Hockey Classic title. The Dogs were led by scoring from Lee Bosma, Jon Sedon, David Bausano, and Andrew Wiese. Assists were added from Wiese, Tim McAfee, Joe Odonnell, Bausano, and Dave Rosenberg.
All-tournament team awards were given to Rosenberg and Sedon, and the Tournament MVP was earned by the captain Bausano. Despite only giving up 3 goals over the weekend, and making several point-blank saves, Georgia Goaltender Harry Kierbow was overlooked as the all-tournament goaltender. Joe O'donnell was a fearsome physical presence on the ice throughout the tournament with multiple crushing checks in both games. Freshman Andrew Wiese was in the running for all-tournament team as well with 2 goals and 4 assists over the weekend, as was Lee Bosma with 3 goals and 2 assists.
Despite only a two goal margin of victory it was clear that Georgia controlled the game throughout. Several near-misses in each period would have opened the game up, and a barrage of one-sided penalty calls in the third period helped keep the game tight. There were times in the final period, however, when Georgia appeard to be on the power play when the teams were at even strenght. At one point the combination of Bausano, Brouillette, Wickstrom, Rosenberg, and Habermehl contained the puck in the Tech zone for over a minute and a half while even-strength.
"We are really starting to come together as a squad," added a jubilant coach Hoos. "Across the board we know this was a complete effort from the team - every player contributed both nights and I am proud of every one of them. When guys are backing each other up and the little things are happening right, they know they're making good decisions. It's great seeing the team gel, especially in an event like this."
The senior class of 2006 showed great leadership and the Dogs' experience was visible throughout the game. The Ice Dog seniors leave Savannah having won 6 straight games in the Classic, including outscoring the Yellowjackets 14-6 in the last three meetings with Georgia Tech in the "Rumble" tournament. The win is especially sweet for fifth-year seniors Ryan Brouillette and David Bausano, who now leave with a winnig record against the Yellowjackets in Savannah after the Dogs lost to Tech thier first two years on the team.
