JH: We went over there and played decently after the first 10 minutes. We liked
how our press was going so well so we stayed with it until we were up by 30.
JH would do that all the time but teams capable of breaking it can get easy
3-point shots. The guys were really excited about using it. That press was one
people haven't seen much - a 1-2-1-1. We used it some against
Tennessee
last year.
They (
Arkansas) are going to struggle and may not win a game. I don't
think anybody will feel sorry for them. Everybody else has better personnel
than they do. That's the price you pay sometimes when you change coaches.
They're playing a lot of young people and this league is unforgiving. JH
remembers going through it his first year at UGA.
Wehunt is being looked to as a "fencepost" guy who JH wants to get more
minutes for. He's a "scorer." Also, Wayne Arnold is coming along,
but JH doesn't have many minutes available, as you don't take guys like
Ezra and Jarvis out. Damien is handling the point well, with a good assist-to-turnover
ratio. Still pressing offensively; he wants to help everywhere all the time
and all at once. JH just wants him to "get lost" in the game. Wright
is now averaging 31 minutes a game, as opposed to 36 last year.
JH reminded Al from Knoxville, the first caller, of what game we've got
coming up. Al is concerned about UGA playing in such an old arena, when he thinks
SC has built two new arenas since Stegeman opened. JH said we've done lots
of studies on what to do, and we're not sure whether we will build a new
arena, or build a couple of practice floors somewhere in the existing structure.
We're not shooting FTs or rebounding as well as last year, but otherwise
are progressing on schedule. JH went over the foul shooting percentages
Bryan from Newnan is surprised he beat George from Memphis on the air. (JH
joked that George might be at a Grizzlies game.) As for the T on Jarvis,
JH thinks Arkansas got frustrated, started talking, and Jarvis said something
back. Our team has been good about not talking the last two years as we've
really worked on that. As for Gibson, we've got to get him into basketball
shape and familiar with what we're doing.
Gibson is listed at 6-4, and says he loves playing against 5-8 corners.
Ted from Savannah told everyone George's wife is probably about to deliver
their child. Also, complimented Jarvis on his defense. JH noted that Jarvis
took out Pitt's top scorer and a gunner from
LSU. JH kidded Jarvis that
he's become a shut-down defender and Jarvis just said that no one had ever
taught him how to play defense before. Jarivs may have to play Marquis Daniels
of
Auburn on Saturday, which could really be some duel.
Ted also pointed out that UGA is now #1 in the RPI. JH remembered a few days
ago, when we were #3, with the #1 strength of schedule. But Ted said it had
been updated today.
Hotline next week is at 4:00, before the Super Bowl.
Upset Saturday yeterday - Duke, Bama, UConn & Notre Dame, among others.
As for Bama, JH was concerned last year about Rod Grizzard. JH thinks Bama hasn't
been able to replace him. They're inconsistent scoring so far .. in games
JH has watched, Bama has gone through stretches of several minutes without scoring.
We've done that too, and JH would like to get us scoring in the 80s again.
Auburn is the surprise of the league. JH talked to Gottfried of Bama, whom says
Auburn acts so far like they could beat the Sacramento Kings. But Auburn has
games at UK & UGA this week.
Florida has the ball bouncing their way so
far .. they were down until the last 30 seconds last night in Columbia. UK has
a guy in Daniels who may be the most improved guy in the league this year. Tough
luck for SC, who started off 1-3 and now has to go to Ole Miss.
Ole Miss beating LSU in Baton Rouge yesterday really sets LSU on its heels after
beating Arizona. MSU got off to an awful start, but they played three of the
top six teams in the league, two on the road. Ole Miss guards you as hard as
anyone.
UK is out running, shooting and pressing, with different guys scoring. This
league is crazy. You look at the matchups and just start laughing because its
so tough.
As for these summer-league suspensions, JH thinks the rule is silly. The rule
was put in regarding high school guys and has been extended to college guys.
Scott noticed three games where guys were coming back from extended suspensions.
A caller complimented JH for clearing the bench last night at Arkansas instead
of running up the score even farther. JH said doing that is a way to thank guys
on the bench who sweat and work hard in practice, but rarely get rewarded with
playing time in a game.
The guys were looking over "Destiny's Dogs" (the book about
the 2002 football team, by Mark Schlabach of the AJC) on the flight back
last night, and Scott suggested Gibson was showing it off to his teammates.
Slay of Tennessee is mad at JH; JH gave Rece Davis of ESPN the names of six
guys whom are the top players in the SEC, but Rece only used five and left Slay
off. Slay has already mentioned that to some sportswriters. Slay also leads
the SEC in FT shooting at 83%. The only frosh at UT is CJ Watson, who is averaging
10 pts per game as a freshman. The UT game is a rarity this season .. no TV.
There are still about 200 tickets left.
Tennessee has guys who can jump out of the gym. We have to go to Vandy next
Wednesday, and they beat Bama last week. We all know how difficult playing at
Vandy is.
Good chance the SEC will have seven teams in the NCAA Tournament … there may
be 8 or 9 good enough. The league is loaded from top to bottom, and it's
a joke how much we beat up on one another.
We only play about 35 games; if you can't get fired up, you need to find
another sport. You may not play your best every night, but you fall back on
fundamentals on the nights when some things don't seem to be going right.
JH tries to not get too high or too low, but he understands you're up for
some games more than others. Games like Arkansas, you have to be cold-blooded
and go out and take care of business.
A late caller congratulated JH for getting a big turnout for the Pitt game.
John from Gainesville suggested thunder-sticks for some games. But JH said he's
seen the place really electric. He expects it to be really loud this week with
the students back in school. Scott reminded the caller about an SEC rule prohibiting
artificial noise-makers.
JH also said Jonas is considered another starter, except his name is not announced.
He just goes out and does what we need him to do.
The coaches do 99% of the tape study. We make a highlight tape of their offense,
defense and personnel of no more than 7 minutes. We also occasionally make a
tape of what we need to improve on. Assistants watch about 5 past games and
JH watches two, then they compare notes and prepare scouting report.
