Munson opened tonite’s show, as usual, by talking about the week’s developments in college football, including some teams that remained unbeaten.
Was it penalties that drove the coaches nuts more than anything else? CMR said that was definitely so, plus ULM pulled off the onside kick to start the second half. We scored every possession of the second half except for fumbling on the last drive with reserves. But times when we were sloppy were bothersome.

Is there enough defense, or more turnovers and mistakes? Most defenses in our league are some of the best in the country. There are more points around the country. But defense, kicking game and avoiding turnovers are still the keys to winning.

Munson thought Tenn. & Fla. were both awesome in the early minutes. CMR noted that both showed vulnerabilities as the game wore on.

Are the young WRs looking better, and are we finding backups on defense? CMR was pleased we got to play a lot of people. Pope, T. Brown & Bailey did not play and their backups did well.

What about the late kickoff? Munson remembered late basketball tipoffs. CMR said we would meet with the guys and make sure their minds on are our task, but there would be some down time when they can watch some great college football.

John in Wrens asked about officiating – would it be helpful to hire full-time officials? CMR wonders how much of a commitment the league can make. It isn’t quite like the NFL with those guys getting paid. We couldn’t keep them employed full time. CMR used the instant replay calls in our game as an example. Both times the officials made the right call as upheld by replay.

Matthew in Winder – injury update and penalties. CMR said discipline was imposed today for the penalties. Pope, Brown and Bailey will be ready Saturday.

Fred in Atlanta notes Joe T. is still on the punt team. CMR thinks we could keep him on the sidelines, but you win games with special teams too. It's an opportunity for a guy like Joe T. to play and help the team win.

Les in Macon wonders what the best defense for the bubble screen is. CMR thinks getting in man coverage would work. But that is not a good idea if a good option package comes along with it. We had Brandon Miller and others playing off the blocks and making tackles near the line.

Miss. St. has a good RB, Norwood. CMR was impressed with him at Media Days and thinks he already has his degree or is close. Munson remembers teams always struggling in Starkville, especially with the cowbells. CMR gets the idea it's loud and intimidating even though not as big as some other places; he remembers playing there when he played at Miami.

And yes, CMR is well aware Vandy is 3-0.

Kevin in Valdosta, virtually reciting the Spurrier playbook, thinks we ought to try the bubble screen, option, or slants in the red zone. Also, we cannot make mental mistakes vs. a team like Miss. St. CMR kiddingly suggested Kevin send his resume in since he had lots of good points. (A later caller, Henley in Atlanta, thinks Kevin should call the plays this week.)

John in Douglasville asked about Massaquoi. CMR says he needs to know what he’s doing. Also, he landed on his hip making a big catch vs. SC and was limping the rest of the game. We only ran 53 plays vs. ULM so couldn’t get guys in a lot. In camp, he missed almost half of the practices as a true frosh due to being injured. He wasn’t ready to practice until the Monday before the first game.

We’ve talked to the backs about why we haven’t had longer runs. Need perimeter blocking, good enough passing game to get defenses off the line and backs who can run someone over or make them miss.

Mike from Covington asked whether Weston or Joe Cox will play. CMR says someone will have to get hurt – soon. It will soon be almost too late to pull a redshirt. Kade got hurt early, missed some practice, and has a few more veterans ahead of him than Massaquoi did.

One thing that would help numbers wise would be to allow guys to have 5 years to play 5. Munson joked the Vandy QB has been there almost his whole life. CMR noted the questions when Cutler was named preseason all-SEC QB and now he’s showing why. CMR was listening to the Vandy announcer talk about how they lost 5 games by 15 points last year but now they’re winning those.

Munson thinks Tech is showing something early on. CMR thinks there are lots of teams who will present a challenge. We can only prepare for Miss. St. this week. That’s the team that beat Florida in Starkville last year. We got a good start on preparation; CMR got to review our game and some tape of the MSU defense on Sat.

Randy in Wadley wonders if we might try to get Joe T. or anyone else some real time experience. CMR wants to be sure DJ is settled in before thinking about anyone else getting some real time snaps. But we have been able to get Joe T. & Barnes some snaps in two games.

CMR is pleased with Ely-Kelso so far; kicking it high, placing it well and also getting the ball off quickly.

J.B. in Covington asked about DJ running the option. DJ is actually 10th in the nation in pass efficiency so far and we’ve only given up two sacks in three games so far .. 6 TDs and 2 INTs. He’s scaring folks with his wheels. We’re not running triple option but letting him read the end on the zone play and can keep it.

Chris in Conyers asked about having two TBs on the field together, like Auburn last year. CMR noted we did lots of it this game and pointed out Ware’s TD catch vs. Boise. All our TBs are good blockers.

John in Conyers also noted the two TB sets and that Milner is off to a strong start. CMR knows when we have guys like Pope and Milner we need to use some two TE sets.

Jerry from Miss. (Texas fan) tried to convince CMR Texas needs Matt Stafford more than we do. CMR laughed and said he couldn’t comment. Jerry also thinks UGA & Texas should play home & home. CMR doesn’t get into it much but mentioned we’ve already picked up series with Arizona St. & Colorado.

Michael in north Ga. thinks the Georgia-Florida game should be played home & home more. CMR says it won’t happen anytime soon, but thinks traveling into heat and into another state doesn’t exactly make it a neutral site. Munson says it’s the longest trip of the year unless we play at Arkansas.

CMR was pleased with Lumpkin’s play (in reply to two callers), scoring a TD and running hard. We called a couple of plays for Lump but DJ kept because the DE rushed inside too hard. Lump also did a very good job in pass protection. CMR notes it's hard to call the offense when the backs have trouble with pass protection.

Munson still thinks the biggest surprise for us was how we jumped Boise St. CMR said our guys were excited. Plus the humidity may have gotten to their QB. We’re leading the SEC in offense – yards and points per game. On defense we’re #10 in the nation in scoring defense and #2 in turnover ratio (GT may be #1 nationally in turnover ratio).
